Marriage: then vs now.

Marriage looks different now.

Not like the beginning.

Back then, it was about time together.
Conversations that lasted late into the night.
Simple plans that felt exciting.

Life was lighter.

Then slowly, things changed.

Work got busier.
Responsibilities grew.
Children came into our lives.

Our conversations became more practical.

  1. School schedules.
  2. Groceries.
  3. Bills.
  4. Weekend/Holiday plans.
  5. Reminiscing about the good old days.
  6. Retirement/Investment.
  7. Health related issues.

where we are just managing life together.

Not romantic.
Not dramatic.

Just partnership.

But over time, I realised something.

Marriage is not only about the big moments.

It’s about the quiet and strong teamwork.

Taking turns when one of us is tired.
Cheering and supporting when one is down.
Holding things together when the other one is overwhelmed.
Trusting that someone is standing beside you and listening to you.

It may not look exciting from the outside.

But inside the life we built,
it is steady and love.

And steady is something I’ve learned to value.

Being needed carries a quiet weight. Not the kind you see. The kind you feel. It means staying alert, even when you’re tired. Because someone depends on you. At work, people look to you for direction. At home, they look to you for comfort and assurance. Sometimes for answers you’re still figuring out yourself. There are moments I wish for a little quiet. Not to run away. Just to breathe, reset and restart. But I’ve learned something along the way. Being needed also means being trusted. Being needed also means i am important. Being needed also means i am respected. It means someone believes you’ll show up. That you’ll do your best. That you’ll stay. No one really announces this. It just becomes part of who you are. And maybe one day, when life is quieter, I’ll look back and miss this season. For now, I’ll carry it with gratitude, kindness, calmness and thankfulness. Okay papa.

Kids say the funniest things when they are not even trying. Sometimes it’s a random question in the car. Sometimes it’s something they say so confidently that makes me pause and laugh. “Daddy, why your hair got less?” “Daddy, who is your favourite child?” “Daddy, who will you save if didi and I both drop into the sea?” “Daddy, you have such a good voice when you sing like Lewis Capaldi.” “Daddy, you are the best dad. So happy you are my dad.” “Daddy, you are the smartest.” “Daddy, you are the best driver.” “Daddy, you are my role model.” One day, one of them asked me, “Papa, when you were young, did you study hard to be where you are today?” I laughed harder than I should have.
